Research
Martha E. Shenton is Professor in Psychiatry and Radiology at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and founding director of the Psychiatry Neuroimaging Laboratory (PNL). The PNL develops and applies advanced neuroimaging techniques to discover and to understand further brain and behavior associations in schizophrenia and other neuropsychiatric disorders. She has received research funds from National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke, VA, Department of Defense, and private foundations. She was awarded a research career development award (K01), two independent career awards (K02), and a senior research award (K05). She was involved in Vietnam Veteran twin studies of PTSD and recently completed a Human Connectome grant in early psychosis. She is multiple PI (MPI) on a project investigating repetitive head injury in former NFL football players and college players. Currently she is PI for a Data Processing and Analysis Coordination Center to investigate biomarkers in individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis. She and members of the PNL are in the forefront of the field in advanced diffusion imaging measures. She is the recipient of numerous awards: Distinguished Investigator Award (NARSAD); William Silen Lifetime Achievement Award for Mentoring, HMS; Fifth Recipient of the Joseph Zubin Memorial Fund Award for Research in Psychopathology; William F. Milton Fund Award for Scientific Research, Harvard University; Catedra Professor Carlos Lloyd Braga Honorary Chair, Universidade do Minho, Braga, Portugal; Stuart T. Hauser, M.D., Ph.D. Mentorship Award, Departments of Psychiatry, HMS; and Nelson Butters Award for Research Contributions in Clinical Neuropsychopathology. She has mentored >100 trainees, served on many NIH study sections and journal editorial boards, and has >500 peer reviewed publications.
